Stories from over 50 years of life in East Durham!
"Jimmy Fallon Slept Here"
My mom calls and tells us that some star from Saturday Night Live stayed this past weekend with his family at our resort. She remarked how sweet and talented he was. They all had drinks to the early morning and played Irish music as this tv star played guitar. She noted how close he was with his mom and dad. They locked the door of the pub and had an old fashion after hours Irish sing song and more than a couple of drinks. My mother said what a great time she had but she still couldn’t remember the Saturday Night Live actor’s name.
The following week she watched Saturday Night Live and realized who the TV star was. It was Jimmy Fallon. His mom and dad were staying for the weekend and Jimmy surprised them that Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Fallon Stayed in Room 1 and Jimmy stayed in room 2. Soon after the visit, my mother received a phone call from Mrs. Fallon, asking my mother to mail back her night gown. It seems she left it behind and she would love if my mom could mail it back.
My mom being the funny Irish woman that she was, said “don’t you think she’d have enough money to buy another my nightgown?” Anyway, my mom did mail back the nightgown and retold the story of the night that Jimmy Fallon stayed at McGraths; secret sing song, nightgown and the guitar he played (now proudly displayed on the pub wall ). It was a well-orchestrated story my mother would tell time and time again.
Years go by, Jimmy Fallon has now got his own TV show, The Jimmy Fallon Late Night show. My friend Mary.my sisters and myself get tickets to a live taping. I come up with the brilliant idea to write “Jimmy Fallon Slept Here” on McGrath’s sign and then take a picture of the sign. I had the picture printed out on a small poster and brought it with me to the taping. We have a few drinks before the show at the Pig and Whistle and talked about how cool it would be to meet Jimmy Fallon, as if. While we are waiting on line outside of the Rockefeller Center studio, I get my nerve up to ask one of the porters if I can have Jimmy Fallon sign my poster. I opened it slightly to show the porter but he dismisses me and says sorry he won’t be able to sign it.
I am defeated but I know I will still enjoy the show. Then we are seated in the highest spot in the studio but can still see the stage. At one point I don’t know if we were being taped, Jimmy Fallon says to the audience “are you bored?” and no one answers. Then he says, “hey you in the green!”, again no one answers. I’m looking around, not realizing that he is speaking to me, the camera is on me at this point and he asked me where am I from, I first said Pearl River and then stammer my speech and said err…. no East Durham! I almost blew it and forgot about the poster. I suddenly remembered and flashed my poster.
Jimmy Fallon Slept Here.
He laughs, the camera is now on my photo and he says “more like I passed out there!” Audience breaks out laughing and my face turns bright red. Jimmy then returns to his monologue and then the show continues while I am still trying to figure out if I what just happened.
At the end of the show Jimmy Fallon came around to the audience and signed the picture for me. After the tapping while going on to the elevators and other audience members come up to me and saying how cool it was and remarked that Jimmy seems like a regular guy, so down to earth. I took the signed poster home and showed my mom. She was delighted and was all smiles. She couldn’t believe Jimmy Fallon remembered the time he spent with her at McGrath’s. Till this day, this photo is still hanging on the wall at McGrath’s Pub.
